The Cocktail Hour
Wednesdays 5am – 6am
Hi, Fi here,
My musical and radio journey was rather dramatic when a drunk-driver changed my life at 19 and knocked me off course from training to be an opera singer to becoming a writer. I was en route to sing with the BBC Symphony Chorus and then had to learn to walk again, during which time I discovered I could write, became an author and was then invited on the radio to talk about my books – and was hooked!
Roll over Beethoven when my musical tastes expanded from strictly classical to encompass everything from ska and jazz to pop, reggae, indies and rock. Plus Christmas carols which I tend to sing from May onwards because they’re just so tuneful, any excuse to sing! I miss travelling the world performing, as well as singing in the great concert halls of the UK but I’m also grateful to be curled up on the sofa with my three rescue greyhounds mixing cocktails and choosing music for my show, and was lucky enough to have been sent around the globe as a journalist to discover the greatest wines, spirits and producers – and music.
My great joy is mixing tracks, cocktails and talk which I do every week on The Cocktail Hour every Wednesday at 5am. I play a wide variety of music on the show and reveal the magic and mayhem of daily life and the joys of gigs, theatre, TV, film and festivals whilst pouring whisky, gin, rum, wine and cocktails – albeit not quite drinking them at that hour! The show’s music is themed which makes for a fun and interesting mix of known and lesser-known tracks and artists and, what you don’t see, is that I’m singing along to every song!
